The summer was wild: really hot, really dry, weeks on end without a drop of rain. Honestly, at first we were worried whether the vines and the grapes could take it. They did — and how. Our old vines in particular showed this year what they're really capable of.
On August 30th we picked the first grapes, and on September 23rd we were done— a historically early vintage.
One small highlight right away: with the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) we had lots at around 100° Oechsle (a measure of sugar content and ripeness), and the Riesling reached ripeness levels rarely seen too. That's already quite powerful — but because we started early and kept a close eye on everything, alongside the power there's also that Moselle-typical freshness, elegance, tension and drinkability.
Everything stayed healthy, the process ran smoothly, and the pressing was clean. And as every year, none of it would have happened without the people who pitched in: family, friends, our team, day after day. I'm truly grateful for that.
What already has me excited: this is going to be a really beautiful vintage. I'm especially curious about the red wine — the ripeness and concentration we brought in with the Spätburgunder promise something special.
After the harvest, the work continues for us: tidying, cleaning, servicing and storing equipment, while the fermentations run and are checked daily.
„What pleased me especially this year: no selection needed in the vineyard — we could harvest everything at its ideal state.“
The new vintage needs its time now. It'll be a while before it's in the glass — but our current wines are already available in our shop, while stocks last.
In the next part I'll take you into the cellar — what's becoming of the individual varieties, and the first taste straight from the barrel.
